Why businesses need business coaching

Ask yourself these questions:

  • is revenue growth something that is important to you?
  • is cash flow an area you would like to see improve?
  • is profitability - taking more money home for yourself - critical to you and your family's future as well as your personal goals?
  • is increasing (and protecting) the value of your business asset something you've been hoping for or wanting?
  • and what about the future - is planning your succession within the business or the successful sale of the business something to consider?
  • do you feel lost or overwhelmed in your business?
  • do you wish you had more time?

So, how can a business coach help me achieve these goals?

It is because the coaches chart and plan the best processes for the business to follow so they perform at their ultimate. Even though the area of expertise and excellence is the domain of the business owner, a coach can direct the business and individual through certain simple yet effective, systematic improvements in their business to achieve direct, positive results.

Improvements in:

  • marketing;
  • time management;
  • systems and processes;
  • financials; and
  • human resources.

These changes enable direct, positive results in cash flow, revenue and profitability. These are changes that enable the business process and system to improve to the point where you can afford the time to spend watching the kids play sport, where you can enjoy your holidays without worrying what will fall apart without you there.

On many occasions the business owner gets caught up in the day to day operations of the business and providing the best service they can to their clients. Subsequently all their time is spent “in” the business rather than “on” developing and growing the business. Again, ask yourself – If I’m not working “on” my business – who is?

Famous author and business mentor Jim Rohn states...

“Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgement, repeated every day”.

Business coaches specialise in identifying these simple errors in judgement and ensuring change takes place.

To clarify the concept lets look at a few simple sporting analogies. We do this as coaching is an accepted requirement in sports. Indeed it is a necessity. No top line sportsperson or athlete is without a coach.

When Roger Federer sacked his coach at the end of 2007 he subsequently failed to win a Grand Slam title in his next three appearances. After re-engaging a coach he went on to win four of the next five Grand Slams. It wasn’t that he suddenly became a better or worse player – he simply had greater direction and became aware of what he couldn’t see.

Glen Mills, Usain Bolts’ coach, has made comments on certain aspects of Usain’s attitude to training…

“….there are some things that he could do with more hard work, but he’s not a person that has a passion for that kind of thing. He does enough to do well”.

Coaches must establish a relationship with their client and through their expertise implement the most effective method to achieve results. There is no complete model for coaching, as all effective systems must be flexible to individual needs. And business coaching is attainable for all businesses regardless of size.
